The roots of humanity on Curaçao go all the way back to 600 AD when the island was populated by the Arowak Indians. In 1499, Spanish conquistadors came upon the island while searching for a supply of drinking water, capturing the indians and selling many of them as slaves. The Dutch conquered Curaçao in 1634, because they needed salt for the herring industry. Curaçao will achieve autonomy within the Kingdom of the Netherlands in July 2007.
As well as being rich in history, Curaçao is very rich in culture, cuisine, education, entertainment and, of course, sports and recreation. Home of the 2005 Little League World Series Champs and Atlanta Braves player Andruw Jones, the island offers diverse activities such as baseball, bowling, diving, golf, tennis and much more.
Located just over 30 miles off the northern coast of Venezuela and outside the hurricane zone, Curaçao boasts an average temperature of 81 degrees Fahrenheit (26 Celsius) with a water temperature of 80 degrees. Our local drinking water is distilled from desalinated sea water and is credited as being so delicious.
